As winter takes hold, the outdoors may seem devoid of color, but that doesn’t mean your indoor space has to follow suit. There are numerous houseplants that burst into bloom during the winter months, bringing warmth and vibrancy to your home. Here are 10 delightful winter bloomers to consider.

1. Holiday Cactus (Schlumbergera):

As the name suggests, Holiday Cactus takes center stage during the holiday season. With its cascading stems adorned with vibrant tubular flowers in shades of red, pink, or white, this plant adds a vibrant touch to any room. There are 3 specific species of Holiday Cactus that bloom around specific holidays. They are Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter Cactus. You can tell which variety it is based on the shape of the foliage and the blooms look slightly different. Schlumbergera are tropical cactus and do not contain any spines unlike desert Cactus. They can be encouraged to bloom by providing them with cooler temperatures and less light. This mimics the end of the growing season and causes the plants to bloom. A light foliage fertilizer spray can also help encourage blooming and new growth. Because these tropical cacti are epiphytic plants they absorb their nutrients from the air more so then any media they are potted in. Be sure to water regularly and to not let them dry out completely or they will drop their blooms(bud blast).

2. Orchids (Orchidaceae):

Several orchid varieties, such as the Phalaenopsis and Cymbidium, bloom during the winter months. Known for their elegant and long-lasting flowers, orchids bring a touch of sophistication to indoor spaces. It can take up to 2 years to get an orchid to bloom. Many plant parents have a grocery store orchids bloom die off and then they throw away the leftover green foliage. This truly is their loss because with certain temperatures and lighting these plants can easily rebloom. Low maintenance, easy care, and does not need a lot of special fertilizer means they are one of the most inexpensive houseplants to own and they produce the most beautiful blooms as a reward for the dedication and patience.

3. Cyclamen (Cyclamen Persicum):

Cyclamen’s unique, upswept petals in shades of pink, red, or white create a visually striking display. These winter-blooming plants prefer cooler temperatures, making them well-suited for the winter season. The foliage is quite spectacular as well. They are a plant grown from tubers and can become dormant in warmer months. They will continue to regrow year after year though as long as the tuber does not rot.

4. Kalanchoe (Kalanchoe Blossfeldiana):

Known for its clusters of small, vibrant flowers, Kalanchoe adds a burst of color to your indoor garden. This easy-to-care-for plant blooms throughout the winter, creating a cheerful atmosphere. Native to Madagascar Kalanchoe is a very hearty plant and because they are an evergreen they always have pretty foliage to enjoy even when not in bloom. The do need quite a bit of light so be sure to utilize those grow lights or windows to ensure your plant is healthy and does not rot away.

5. Winter-flowering Begonia (Begonia Elatior):

With its bright, showy flowers, the Winter-flowering Begonia thrives in the cooler months. Also called Rieger Begonias,  these tuberose plants are a cross between beautiful summer blooming begonias and hearty winter begonias bringing you the perfect pairing of cold hearty and beautiful blooms. Available in various colors, these begonias are sure to bring a splash of color to your winter decor. Be sure to check which begonia you are purchasing though because there are fifteen to twenty thousand varieties and they can be for almost any conditions. Be sure to grab this type of begonia for cooler temperatures and ensure it meets your specific conditions.

6. String of Hearts (Ceropegia Woodii):

The delicate and cascading vines of the String of Hearts produce small, heart-shaped leaves and charming tubular flowers. They come in a variety of colors including silver, green, and pink. Naturally occurring on mountainside cliffs, these plants love their sunlight and only need an occasional good soaking. These trailing plants not only add visual interest with their beautiful foliage, they also bloom during the winter. Tiny little unique blooms shaped similar to a trumpet. Usually a pale pink or white. They can be pollinated and when they go to seed the blooms develop fluffy looking parachutes on their seed pods akin to dandelion wishes. You can wrap a little organza bag around them to save them and keep the mess from your home or place them among many plants and watch them sprout little hearts at the base of all your other houseplants.

7.  Peperomia:

Peperomia, a diverse genus of small houseplants, is enjoyed for its unique foliage rather than its blooms. Most people do not even realize peperomia produce blooms or recognize them when they do see them. With over 1,500 known species, peperomias exhibit a remarkable range of leaf shapes, sizes, and colors, making them a popular choice among indoor plant enthusiasts.  While peperomias are not typically grown for their flowers, most species do produce inconspicuous spikes of tiny, tubular blooms that look similar to tails. These flowers, often green or white, are more of a subtle accent than a showy display. One noteworthy example is the Peperomia Prostrata(String of Turtles), which graces its owners with thin, green, delicate flower stalks. The blooms are usually small in comparison to the lush and attractive leaves that steal the spotlight. Despite the modest floral presence, peperomias are cherished for their low-maintenance nature and ability to thrive in various indoor conditions. Their compact size and captivating foliage make them ideal for tabletops, shelves, or terrariums. Cultivating Peperomias is a rewarding experience for plant enthusiasts seeking diverse greenery without the demand for showy blooms.

Adding these winter-blooming houseplants to your indoor garden can turn the colder months into a season of color and excitement. Whether you prefer the classic Poinsettia or the charming String of Hearts, these plants bring life and beauty to your home while you eagerly await spring.
