7 Must-Have Pilea Varieties for Your Indoor Garden

Pilea are stunning little plants from South America and Asia. Appreciated for their unique foliage and low-maintenance care, Pilea offers a variety of low light captivating species. Here are seven must-have Pilea varieties you would be disappointed to miss out on. 

1. Pilea Peperomioides (Chinese Money Plant)

Pilea Peperomioides

Starting with the classic, the Pilea Peperomioides, or UFO Plant, is renowned for its flat circular-shaped leaves. This particular Pilea requires brighter light, higher humidity, and to not be overwatered. It is by far the most well known and recognized Pilea variety but the care is very particular. This variety adds a touch of unique charm to any space and is an excellent choice for any plant hobbyist. It is even said to have medicinal properties according to its native growers.  

2. Pilea Glauca (Grey Baby Tears)

For those seeking a more compact option, the Pilea Glauca, also known as Baby Tears is a miniature marvel. Its tiny, silver-green leaves cascade or creep elegantly, making it a perfect choice for hanging baskets or terrariums. It propagates very easily and can be used for unique planter displays or tucked in terrarium crevices. It is a low light plant and much easier to care for then the Pilea Pepermoidies. A perfect plants for beginners and seasoned plant lovers alike. 

3. Pilea Involucrata (Friendship Plant)

The Friendship Plant, or Pilea Involucrata, is recognized for its beautiful textured leaves and unique vareigation. Rounded leaves that become more pink as they are exposed to more light. In lower light the foliage is gray and silver with a blush colored back. Absolutely gorgeous foliage in any

. This variety thrives in humidity, making it an ideal choice for bathrooms, kitchens, or terrariums. They are also easily propagated by cutting a main stem with at least 2 leaves left on it. Simply place the cuttings in water or soil and watch it root within days.

4. Pilea Moon Valley

With its heavily textured green leaves resembling the surface of the moon, the Pilea Moon Valley adds an incredibly unique visual to any plant space. Known for its rapid growth and ease of care this is one Pilea everyone should try. Like other Pilea the vareigation is light dependent but the spikey texture remains regardless of lighting conditions. A very easy care plant that can handle drying out but prefers more humid and moisturized conditions. 

5. Pilea Cadierei (Aluminum Plant)

The Pilea Cadierei, or Aluminum Plant, features striking silver markings on its dark green leaves, creating a very attractive but stark contrast. The silver also shimmers like Aluminum and becomes more prominent in more light. This variety is adaptable to different light conditions, making it a versatile choice for various indoor environments. It is also one of the tallest Pilea available. These can grow up to 3ft high while most Pilea only grow up to a foot. 

6. Pilea Microphylla (Artillery Plant)

Pilea Microphylla is a charming and quirky addition to any space. This specific variety has tiny, round leaves and is an excellent conversation starter. There are two popular varieties of this plant. One is variegated with pink, green, and white foliage. The other is all green. Both varieties are very tiny, bushy, and need good lighting and a higher humidity to thrive.

7. Pilea “Dark Mystery”

Dark Mystery is a mysterious looking plant with a bushy habit and deep metallic grey colored foliage. Shaped like daggers with ruffled edges while having an almost Alocasia dragon scale texture to its leaves, this plant is incredibly unique. Despite its very complex features this Pilea is very easy care. Just do not let it dry all the way out and keep the humidity above 50%. Other then that this plant has very little care requirements and is perfect for all levels of plant care.
