The care for each coleus is going to be very similar, if not the same, regardless of the variety of coleus you’ve chosen. These care instructions are for indoor coleus plants.

Best Temperature Range For Your Coleus

The ideal temperature for indoor coleus plants is no less than 65° and no more than 85°. Also, be sure to avoid sudden drops in temperature as this can shock your plant.

The Perfect Humidity Level For Your Coleus Plants

Coleus plants prefer medium to high humidity, so you may want to invest in a humidifier if keeping this plant indoors. If you cannot get a humidifier, there are plenty of natural ways to increase the humidity in your home. A way to do this in your home is to shower with the door open; doing this will allow the moisture to venture through the rest of the house for your plant. Another way to boost humidity is to fill a vase full of water and place it in front of a sunny window to evaporate and allow moisture to enter the air.

The Best Soil For Your Coleus

The soil that will make your coleus thrive is a quick-draining soil that allows airflow to the roots. Perlite or sand base soils are ideal for indoor coleus; all-purpose potting soils should suffice when caring for coleus.

Avoid any plant mixes specifically formulated for a specific plant as they can contain too many of the wrong ingredients, such as acidic ingredients, causing your plant to fail. You’ll also need to avoid using straight coir or sphagnum peat moss because they are known to retain an excessive amount of water. If you notice your potting soil isn’t draining water fast enough for your coleus, you can add extra perlite to improve the drainage.

Watering Your Coleus Plants

During your plant’s active growing months, the soil should remain moist at all times. However, during the winter months, you may be able to go more extended periods without watering your plant since it is not actively growing. In this case, you may allow the top half an inch of soil to dry out completely before watering again.

The Best Fertilizer For Your Coleus Plants

During your plant’s active growing months, it is best to fertilize every 1 or 2 weeks at half of the strength recommended on the label. When your plant is not actively growing, do not fertilize. Use a fertilizer higher in nitrogen and lower in phosphorus and stray away from balanced fertilizers with equal ratios for best results.

There are a variety of different beautiful colorful coleus plants. Finding the right color combination for your home aesthetic should be a breeze, and coleus plants are cared for similarly if not the same from one another. Regardless of the color your choose, you’ll be happy with these vibrant plants creating an entirely different environment for your home.
