Why is it important to aerate soil?

Air circulating through the soil particles’ spaces promotes root growth and is vital to soil organisms’ existence. A clay pot, being porous, admits a certain amount of air into the soil and therefore keeps the soil in better condition than does a nonporous pot. If you use a non-porous pot, the soil can—and should—be aerated by light cultivation of the surface.
