What is causing the sticky substance on my African violets? Some leaves are also covered with black mold and are out of shape.

Aphids or plant lice are the cause. These are tiny, soft-sucking insects, usually greenish but sometimes red or black. They attack a number of different plants but are easily controlled with malathion or lindane spray, or you can eliminate them by treating the soil with sodium selenate.
