Other than pinching off the shoots to force a plant to bush out, how can I get more bushy growth?

Pinching back is right, but if you aren’t seeing the growth you want, your plant probably needs more sunlight. Plants that need considerable sunshine or bright light to develop well do not respond sufficiently to pruning unless also given the proper exposure.
