If a container does not have a drainage hole, how do I provide drainage?

Instead of drainage holes, try putting a good layer of shards (broken pots), small stones, or hard cinders in the bottom of the pot. In small pots without bottom drainage, this layer should be 1 inch or more deep. In pots larger than 6 inches in diameter, the layer should be 2 to 3 inches deep.
