How often is it safe to prune houseplants?

If you take off a little growth at a time, you can prune plants frequently—every month or even every couple of weeks if a plant is a fast grower. Very frequent pruning is necessary to shape bonsai or create topiaries. But some slow growers can go unchecked for a year or two. You must gauge pruning to the development and type of the plant.
