How do I prepare pots and other containers for planting?

No matter what they are made of, used containers must first be washed thoroughly with soap and water to remove lingering microorganisms (and to make them look better). New clay pots—as well as any not used for a long time—should be soaked in clear water for several hours; otherwise, they draw too much moisture from the soil.
