How can I build a planter to serve as a low divider between our living and dining areas?

Make it of wood, stone, brick, concrete—just about anything. A wood planter should be lined with copper. It’s a good idea also to provide bottom drainage holes that carry excess water off into a removable tray under the planter. If you cannot do this, be sure to fill the bottom of the planter with 3 or more inches of coarse gravel. Or you can simply keep your plants in pots, set them in the planter, and surround them with peat moss.
