How are dish gardens planted?

For containers, use glass or ceramic—but not metal— bowls, at least 3 inches deep, with or without drainage holes. Put a 1-inch layer of gravel in the bottom, cover with a thin layer of moss to keep the soil from settling, and then fill it to within 1/2 inch of the top with general-purpose soil.
