Do I have to use glass for plant shelves built across a window at several levels?

You don’t have to use glass, but it has some advantages: It looks better than solid shelves and is easier to keep clean. More importantly, when the sun is high in the sky, it lets the rays through to all the plants, and does not cut them off as wood shelves might. Use 1/4-inch plate glass to support the weight of the pots, and be sure to have the front edges beveled and polished so you don’t cut yourself.
