Can I use tin cans as pots for houseplants?

Certainly. But they will rust if not well painted, and the soil in them can easily sour because air reaches it through only the top surface. The fact that a houseplant will grow in cheap tin cans indicates that it will grow in just about anything that holds soil. Many plants are not particular about their abodes if you take care of them.
