Can I reduce the loss of water from clay pots by setting them in jardinieres?

You will reduce water loss, but you may also kill your plants. Jardinieres are dangerous because they collect the water draining from the containers set into them and people often forget to empty them. As a result, the stagnant pool of water deepens until it reaches the set-in pot, which then soaks up the moisture, waterlogs the soil, and soon brings on root rot. If you must use jardinieres, put a block of wood in the bottom so the flowerpot is above the water level. And empty the jardinieres regularly.
